What Would Summer Wear?

Michelle Obama’s Perfect Political Style

Posted in style, style icons by summercrobbins on November 4, 2008

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a political post, but being that it’s election day, I’d like to take this opportunity to note Michelle Obama’s super chic personal style. Women in politics are scrutinized not just for their ideals or beliefs but for how they present themselves daily. There’s a fine fashion line they walk. One misstep and they’re seen as too sexy, too dowdy, or just plain tasteless. I think too few have really stepped up to the plate and allowed their personal style to shine through as Michelle Obama has. She always looks dignified, classy, beautiful, confident, and pulled together. The woman knows how to accessorize and wear the right silhouettes, colors, and prints (!) for her body type. Let me share with you some of my favorite Michelle looks.

mo-on-jay2Michelle on the Tonight Show in J.Crew. Click here to buy this outfit featured on the J.Crew site. Notice the pieces don’t match they coordinate. Stylish.
mo-in-pearls1

Michelle in a pleated sleeveless blouse with raw edge detail, accessorized with a dramatic two tone multi-strand pearl necklace. This is a very modern look that nods to traditional elegance. Sophisticated.

mo-abstract-printed-dressMichelle in a very modern feminine abstract printed dress accessorized with statement brooches. Prints are very personal so most women in politics steer clear. But not Michelle. This look proves that she’s willing to take fashion risks. Confident.

mo-in-purple-dress

Michelle in a beautifully tailored purple shift with a modern black patent leather belt and black patent heels. Smart.

mo-ruffle-topMichelle in a dramatic blouse and belt paired with a pencil skirt. Each of these pieces is beautifully detailed and effortlessly works together. Modern.

mo-at-dem-convention

Michelle in a perfectly tailored silhouette paired with a vintage brooch during her speech at the Democratic Convention. Classic.

mo-in-printed-floral-dress

Michelle in a beautiful floral printed shirt dress. One can see perfectly the contrast between Jill in (what I’m guessing is) a St. John very traditional tried-and-true political suit vs. Michelle’s super confident pretty dress. If Jill belted this suit at the waist with a great black leather belt and added a statement necklace and maybe a chunky bracelet, she’d look just as great as Michelle. It’s all about bringing your personality into your clothing. Brilliant.

Now stop reading this and go out and vote. I know I am. :)

My Search for the Perfect Swimsuit Has Ended

Posted in fab designers, style by summercrobbins on November 4, 2008

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. As the cold breezes descend on NYC, I’m reminded that in just a few short months I’ll be on vacation in a tropical climate in need of the perfect swimsuit.

Just like many of you, I’ve been a bikini girl for years. I’ve preferred bikinis mostly because they’re easier to fit and it’s hard to find a sexy one piece. That being said, I am sick of bikinis. Sure they’re great for a tan, but I don’t tan anyway. I slather on the SPF 50 every couple of hours. Also, if you spend any time at the beach in the ocean, you’d better hold onto that bikini of yours because the waves can steal it away at any moment. For the past few years I’ve been searching for the perfect one-piece to no avail. They’re either too dowdy or too kitschy or they’re too short on my long torso. Until now.

Anne Pachan is my hero. I am obsessed with her new swimwear line Cala Ossidiana which is named after an Aeolian island of Lipari where her family is originally from. All of her swimwear is amazing but I am particularly in love with her one pieces. They’re smart, sexy, and modern and would look great on almost any body type. Check out my favorite looks from her collection.
